D-2 defeats NAIA 29-28 in a last minute thiller !!!!!

2011 D-2 team photo

With the college football season coming to a close, a select few players were prepared for the first installment of the Collegiate Development Football League’s NAIA VS Division II Senior classic All-star game. Middletown NY at Faller field was the setting for the match up.  The players were ready to show the nation why they were chosen to play in the CDFL’s All-star show case.  We kicked off at 1:45 and with the first drive by Division 2 the NAIA was setting the tone early with big hits from Cody Kilthau and a huge sack from Jason brown forcing the D2 to punt. Giving the momentum and now the ball to the side of the NAIA, but the NAIA ran a double reverse pass play which was sniffed out by the DII defense and they created a fumble giving the ball right back to the DII offense. A big pass to B.J Bryant put the ball down at the 5 yard line setting up a 3rd down TD run putting the first points of the game on the board D2-7 NAIA-0. Back to back three and outs by the NAIA and DII offenses and a few short drives brought us to the end of the first. The D2 started at their 12 yard line. Lead by QB Kevin Lynch the DII offense started driving down field. First down pass to Charles Johnson starts it off. A few nice completions to RB Rashaad Slowley and WR Trevor Kennedy brought them within the NAIA’s 30 yard line.  They had to settle for a 45 yard field goal looking to go up by 10. But the NAIA special teams made a huge play blocking the kick then picked up by #25 FS Ricky Carlson and returned to the house 65 yards putting  points on the board for the NAIA. With 2:37 left in the 2nd it was tied 7-7. After getting the ball back the DII had to punt and the special teams made another costly mistake. The Long snap went over the head of the punter recovered and was returned for a TD by #14 Sam Guillaume of NAIA going into half time with the lead 14-7.

2011 NAIA team photo

Starting with the ball in the second half QB Chris Ware had early success with the hurry up offense hitting passes to WR’s Sam Charles and Kent McDonald. They had the D2 defense in disarray as the NAIA drove the ball down in to the red zone that set up a 3rd down QB roll out run for a TD score NAIA 21- D2-7 9:56 left in the third. NAIA offense gets the ball back on the 39 yard line when QB Ware and Franke Wolfe have a miss communication and run into each other in the back field causing a fumble recovered by the D2 defense missing a chance up by 14 to stretch the lead to three scores. With the chance to capitalize on the mistake the D2 turns to 4 Strait powering runs by Slowley and drives the D2 into NAIA territory. With the drive stalling at the 2 yard line, down by 14 points and 1:50 left in the 3rd quarter on 4th down this was a score they had to have.  Shotgun formation Lynch drops back and drills a pass to #85 Johnson in the left corner of the end zone bringing the game within 7 points. After the NAIA offense gets another score, a TD pass to Beau Dailey putting them up again by 14 with 8:53 left in the game. The DII had to find a way to put some points on the board and stop the NAIA. With back to back big catches by #85 Johnson and #80 B.J. Bryant got them the ball back in to the red zone. On their first play from the 10 yard line Lynch gave a hand off to the right for RB Michael Noffsinger and he broke loose for a TD bringing the D2 back within 7 with 7:13 in the game. With 4:47 left in the game the D2 offense gets the ball back at the 5 yard line and has to drive 95 yards to get the game tying score. A few short passes gets them to their 40 and with time running out the D2 offense dials up the long bomb throwing deep to WR Johnson for a 45 yard pass play down to the 15 yard line. Setting up a game tying TD pass to TE Mike Rodriguez.  With the game on the line the D2 Coach decides to go for the lead and the potentially the win right now. And with a play action pass throwing under pressure and off his back foot Lynch still completes the pass right to Rodriguez again and the DII takes the lead with 44 seconds left on the clock.
NAIA takes over with 39 seconds left and on consecutive plays the D2 defense steps up and sacks the QB making the NAIA burn there last timeout with 22 seconds left on the clock. With the ball at their 30 A double reverse pass gets the ball down to the 50 year line as the clock was still running, a quick snap and pass to Sam Charles as the clock is still winding down he gets out of bounds at the 38 yard line with 1.5sec on the clock. They Spike the ball with .5 sec left on the clock and had to attempt a 55 yard field goal to win the game by kicker Andrew Neilson and the kick gets blocked ending what was and exhilarating first NAIA VS Division II Senior classic.
